Global cost of chronic disease treatment to top $47 trillion by 2030, more than triple current US national debt
avatar

(NaturalNews) Between now and 2030, the aggregate global cost of treating the five most common, non-infectious diseases — cancer, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and mental health disorders — will top $47 trillion, according to a new report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF). And experts warn that if nothing is done to curb this escalating healthcare crisis, the global economy will most certainly collapse due to insurmountable financial insolvency.

To put this astronomical $47 trillion figure into perspective, consider the fact that the current US national debt is just under $15 trillion — this means that at the current rate of growth, global healthcare costs associated with treating just these five diseases will exceed the US national debt by more than 300 percent in less than 20 years.

Put another way, the entire global gross domestic product (GDP), which represents the final value of all goods and services produced, was $63 trillion in 2010. Based on WEF figures, global treatment costs for the “big five” non-communicable diseases will represent a shocking 75 percent of the current global GDP by 2030.

In other words, no economy will be able to survive this approaching doomsday scenario, which is why the world’s current course must change as soon as possible. WEF spokesmen and others commenting on the report highlight increasing taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, and encouraging less consumption of “salt and trans fats,” as a helpful solution for reducing such costs. But such approaches are largely simplistic and do not fully address the root causes of non-communicable disease.

Truth be told, modern society in many industrialized nations is riddled with toxic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and pollutants that are wreaking havoc on both environmental and human health. The nature of genetically-modified organisms (GMO) in the food supply, reliance on processed foods as part of the Standard American Diet (SAD), and an overall complacency among many towards exercise, are also some of the primary factors contributing to this modern health crisis.

We here at NaturalNews, however, will continue to stress the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, which includes eating a whole food-based diet rich in disease-preventing nutrients. Superfoods, organic produce, pasture-based meats, healthy oils, medicinal herbs — integrating these and many other health-promoting foods into mainstream society are a surefire way to reduce the disease epidemic, and significantly reduce the global healthcare bill in the process.

Anti-depressants no better than placebos according to scientific studies | Health Impact News
avatar

by Dr John Read

Mental health services have become increasingly dominated by psychiatry’s ”medical model”, which claims that feeling depressed, anxious or paranoid is primarily caused by genetic predispositions and chemical imbalances.

This has led to alarming rises in chemical solutions to distress. In New Zealand, one in nine adults (and one in five women) is prescribed antidepressants every year.

The public, however, in every country studied, including Australia, believes that mental health problems are caused by issues such as stress, poverty and isolation. The public also prefers talking therapies to drugs and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Research suggests the public is right. For example, the single best predictor of just about every mental health problem is poverty, followed by other social factors such as abuse, neglect and early loss of parents in childhood, and – once in adulthood – loneliness and a range of adverse events including losses and defeats of various kinds.

Meanwhile, reviews of studies on anti-depressants (which only recently have been able to include those previously kept secret by drug companies) conclude that they are superior to placebos only for those at the extreme end of the ”most severe” group of depressed people. This represents less than 10 per cent of the people who are receiving these drugs.

A recent Cochrane review (the type most highly regarded in the scientific community) for risperidone, a leading anti-psychotic drug, ”suggests that there is no clear difference between risperidone and [a] placebo”.

The idea that one can get proper nutrition from diet alone is largely a myth
avatar

(NaturalNews) One of the biggest health myths is the idea that a person can get all the nutrition s/he needs by simply eating a balanced diet. The truth is that it is next to impossible to get even the minimal RDA amounts of the limited number of vitamins and minerals on the RDA list, much less the amounts of all the many nutrients needed for optimal health from diet alone.

Decades of over-farming has left the world’s top soils severely depleted of essential minerals. For the most part, the only minerals replaced have been those needed for optimal growth and not vital minerals such as magnesium which are needed for optimal health.

See:

http://www.naturalnews.com/023237_m…

Foods on our grocers’ shelves frequently have had true nutrition processed out (and often harmful additives processed in to enhance shelf life, taste, color and texture). In many instances most of the claimed nutrition comes from added synthetic petrochemical vitamins and crushed rock minerals – which are vastly inferior to natural vitamins and minerals found in food.

This author has repeatedly challenged balanced-diet proponents to devise a weekly 2000 to 2500 calorie a day diet plan which provides all of just the measly nutrient amounts on the limited RDA chart. Thus far no one has come close. Keep in mind that in many instances RDA amounts of vitamins and minerals are merely the theoretical amounts needed to prevent deficiency-related illness. Besides the fact that RDA amounts are often far below the optimal amounts, the RDA list does not include literally hundreds of other valuable nutrients which we have evolved and adapted to utilize.

If it is so easy to get all the nutrition needed from diet alone, why is it that up to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium? For that matter, why is it that most of us are deficient in other vital nutrients as well – even those of us who regularly eat a so-called balanced diet?

Another related myth is the idea that doctors are good sources of information and advice about diet and nutrition. In most instances, mainstream doctors are woefully deficient in information about diet and nutrition. Doctors are taught in medical schools where the primary funding source is the pharmaceutical industry and where curriculum is controlled by the AMA. Not surprisingly, doctors are taught that the way to treat illness is to prescribe drug company medications and to perform mainstream medical treatments. What they are not taught is the vital role that diet and proper nutrition play in our health.

One longtime doctor turned naturopath told this author that during his entire mainstream education he had but one single lecture on diet and nutrition. Other doctors, including more recent graduates, confirmed that their educational experience was much the same when it came to diet and nutrition.

In the world of mainstream health misinformation about vegetable and fruit servings, a serving of a fortified “fruit drink” is considered equal to a bowl of fresh organic blueberries and an order of french fries is equal to a bowl of fresh organic spinach.

A good plan for obtaining plenty of nutrition to insure a maximum of good health and a minimum of illness is:

1. Eat a healthy and varied nutrient-dense diet with as many fresh organic items as possible.

2. Avoid junk foods, processed foods and inorganic meats – especially processed meat products.

3. Utilize supplemental items such as organic superfood powders and whole food derived nutrients to insure that you get all the vital kinds and amounts of nutrition needed.

Technology can seriously damage your health
avatar

(NaturalNews) Did you know that technology can seriously damage your health? Tragically most people still don’t get it. The World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) states very clearly that there are serious health risks from current exposure levels to electronic fields coming from wi-fi, laptops, mobile phones and ipads. Exposure to them increases the risk of cancer, brain tumours, autism, diabetes, chronic fatigue, hay fever and depression.

They state that we are being kept in the dark about these effects due to the fact that “present sources of funding bias the interpretation of findings towards rejection of evidence of possible health risks”

Is it more than just a coincidence that the health of billions of people are being affected since the introduction of technology in the 1980′s.

A staggering 220 million people now suffer from diabetes. This is set to rise to 400 million by the year 2030.

Do you think that it can’t happen to you or your children? Think again. Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Approximately 70 million people worldwide are affected by autism. This number has increased 6,000% in the past 20 years.

Why have we suddenly become intolerant to food? Is it just the chemicals we put in our food that have caused it? THINK AGAIN.

Over 270 million people in the world now suffer from food allergies. Approximately 3 million of them are children under the age of 18. That is a 400% increase worldwide in 20 years.

1 in 4 European children under the age of 10 suffers from an allergy.

Potentially fatal peanut allergies now affect one in 70 children.

An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from Asthma, with 250,000 deaths attributed to the disease. That is a 300% increase in asthma in the last 20 years.

ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION

About 10 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hypersensitivity Disorder). Worldwide there was a 400% increase in ADHD in the last 20 years.

2.5m people now suffer from Multiple Sclerosis

ONE IN FIVE people in the world suffers from hay fever which is expected to triple between now and 2030.

ARE YOU LISTENING

Planning to have children, – you had better hurry up. The average man has lost 53% of sperm production over the last 50 years. At the present rate of decline it will take 70 years before the sperm count goes to zero.

31% of pregnancies now end in miscarriage. This number increased between 2005 and 2009 by 15%. In the same period 25% more women received treatment for infertility.

80% of the world’s population suffer from sleeping disorders. In the U.S. 40 million people suffer from some type of sleeping disorder.

COULD IT JUST BE A COINCIDENCE THAT:

1. MOBILE PHONE SALES ROSE FROM 50 MILLION IN 1995 TO 5 BILLION BY 2010

2. THERE WERE 1 BILLION PC’S IN USE AROUND THE WORLD IN 2008

3. THIS NUMBER WILL DOUBLE BY 2013 TO 2 BILLION

4. BY 2012 THERE ARE EXPECTED TO BE 14 BILLION DEVICES CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET

5 6.1 TRILLION TEXT MESSAGES WERE SAID TO BE SENT IN 2010

Do you want to know who benefits from all of our bad health – drug companies!

One of the world’s largest drug companies, Pfizer, saw profits rise from $10.02 Billion dollars in 1995 to $67.8 billion dollars in 2010.

Worldwide sales of drugs in 2012 were a staggering $830 billion dollars.

Global Pharmaceutical sales are expected to reach $1.1 Trillion dollars by 2014

DO YOU STILL NOT GET IT

Technology can damage your health and only one group of people benefit. IT IS NOT YOU.

Anybody could be one of the next two billion sufferers, your sister, brother, mother, father, grandparent, grandchild, friend or colleague.

OR EVEN YOU.

New Law Could Empty Vitamins Aisle… – Healthy Living on Shine
avatar

by Jim Healthy, on Thu Sep 15, 2011 3:47pm PDT

Do you take your daily multi, or at least make it an intention? That option might become a lot more complicated in the near future.

The FDA, which regulates foods and drugs in the US, has turned its focus on nutritional supplements — and its proposed criteria will leave very few supplements standing.

Here’s what could go down:

Under these new guidelines, Vitamin A, B complex, C, and D, as well as CoQ 10, would be outlawed.

The FDA will require that supplement manufacturers fund prohibitively expensive studies using doses multiplied by a “safety factor” of as high as 2,000 times the recommended dose. For instance, the FDA is proposing that two species of animals, rodents and young dogs, will be forced to ingest 2.4 million milligrams of fish oil per day, for 90 days. Humans take 2,400 milligrams daily — and we weigh 10 times as much as small dogs. In addition to these inhumane practices, this requirement will destroy most supplement companies (except those secretly owned by pharmaceutical manufacturers).

Supplements can only include ingredients found in the “typical food supply.” And what exactly does that mean to the FDA? Does echinacea qualify as being in the typical food supply? (I doubt it, since deep fried echinacea blossoms are not on your local Applebee’s menu.)

The FDA will only approve supplement ingredients that are at the same levels that it uses for synthetic food additives and preservatives, which is in violation of the 1994 law, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which categorizes supplements as foods, not additives.

The FDA is treating supplement ingredients under the same exacting scrutiny as it does with known cancer-causing chemicals like aspartame, MSG, and sodium nitrate — demanding that the supplements be reduced to “inert” levels of concentration that will render them ineffective to consumers.

Each ingredient, as well as the supplement itself, will be required to undergo a New Dietary Ingredient Notification (NDIN) process — even if the same ingredient is used by other companies. This process takes 75 days at a bare minimum. And as of yet, 83% of NDINs have been rejected by the FDA. And by the way, “new” refers to products that have been in use for up to 17 years.

Are you worried yet?

After this law passes — and it will if we don’t act soon top stop it — your only options will be pharmaceutical drugs (and we know how well they work, don’t we?).

In case you don’t: Every year, 100,000 people per year die from prescription drugs — and this number only includes people who die from known side effects, not from prescription errors made by doctors and pharmacists.

Guess how many people died in 2006, 2007 and 2008, combined, from supplements? Six.

And yet who is the FDA going after? Not the pharmaceutical industry. They’re going after our supplements.

Here’s how to stop them:

Time for action is short.

The FDA has extended the period for you to protest this law until September 30. So it’s time to raise your voice while there’s still a chance. Once the law passes, it will be too late. Then, you’ll wish you had, I promise.

The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) has set up an easy, quick way to protest the FDA’s action. Click here to tell Congress and the FDA to keep their hands OFF our supplements. It will only take a few short minutes.

Treat cancer – Recent research shows natural combinations boost IV vitamin C
avatar

(NaturalNews) The latest research on high dose, intravenous vitamin C continues to confirm its cytotoxic effects on many cancers in tissue culture models. Results have been so promising that oncologists are now researching the combination of vitamin C with standard chemo drugs. Not surprisingly, vitamin C was found to boost the effectiveness of several chemo drugs so much that two clinical trials have been started. But recent research has also uncovered several natural compounds that boost the cancer-killing effects of vitamin C and may pave the way for highly effective, all-natural combination therapies in the future.

It is now well accepted that high dose IV vitamin C therapy generates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in tissues, and it is the H2O2 that selectively kills cancer cells through oxidative stress. Oncologists reasoned that this added stress may enhance chemo drugs’ effectiveness. Many lab studies have supported this, showing that vitamin C significantly increases the effectiveness of drugs against breast, colon, ovarian, prostate cancer cells and others. However, some of the same studies also confirmed the cytotoxicity of vitamin C alone for these cancers. This raises the question if doctors should be looking for less harmful, natural agents to combine with vitamin C rather than chemo drugs, which often carry terrible side effects and toxicity.

Recent research has shown that several natural compounds do indeed boost vitamin C’s ability to kill cancer cells. A summary of this is shown in the table below, along with the combined anti-cancer effect compared to vitamin C alone (indicative only), and the type of cancer tested.

Natural Agent Combined With Vitamin C or H2O2–Combined Effect–Cancer Type/Cell Line

Maitake Beta-glucan++prostate PC-3

Maitake GD Fraction++bladder T24

Meshimakobu PL Fraction ++bladder T24

Black tea polyphenol TF(3)++lung adenocarcinoma SPC-A-1

Green tea polyphenol EGCG+lung adenocarcinoma SPC-A-1

Retinoic Acid++breast MCF-7

Vitamin D (with H2O2)+breast MCF-7

Vitamin D (with H2O2)+colon HT-29

Hyperthermia+leukemia

Hyperthermia +glioblastoma

Copper (CuCl / CuCl2)+leukemia HL-60

Iron (FeCl2 / FeCl3)-leukemia HL-60

IV Glutathione–pancreas xenograft

Maitake and meshimakobu mushroom extracts combined with vitamin C achieved a 90% death rate of bladder cancer cells, while maitake extract with vitamin C achieved a 95% death rate of prostate cancer cells — and all with a relatively low dose of vitamin C. Black and green tea polyphenols were both helpful, but black tea polyphenol was the stand-out winner, increasing lung cancer cell death rate from 1% to over 22%. Retinoic acid (a metabolite of vitamin A) tripled the anti-proliferative effect of vitamin C on breast cancer cells (up to 75.7% inhibition). Vitamin D (calcitriol) combined with H2O2, which is released during IV vitamin C treatment, increased the breast cancer cell death rate by 78% compared to H2O2 alone. Some additives, however, actually inhibited the effectiveness of vitamin C. For example, vitamin C lost 95% of its cancer killing power when glutathione was co-injected, and the tumour shrinkage normally seen with vitamin C alone was inhibited.

This remains a very active area of research, and more powerful combinations with vitamin C may yet be identified in the future. The positive combinations shown above are not yet being tested in clinical trials, but in the meantime they offer a lower risk, high potential benefit that patients and practitioners may want to consider in designing their own natural therapies.

Are You Getting Enough Sulfur in Your Body?
avatar

By Dr. Mercola

Sulfur is the third most abundant mineral in your body, after calcium and phosphorous. It’s an important mineral element that you get almost wholly through dietary proteins, yet it’s been over 20 years since the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) issued its last update on recommended daily allowances (RDA) for it.

In a study examining critical elements about how sulfur works in the body, researchers say the importance of this mineral may be underestimated, and that it’s possible that we may not be getting enough of it.

The Importance of Sulfur

Close to half of the sulfur in your body can be found in your muscles, skin and bones, but it does much more than benefit just these three areas. It plays important roles in many bodily systems.

Sulfur bonds are required for proteins to maintain their shape, and these bonds determine the biological activity of the proteins. For example, as explained in the featured MSM newsletter, hair and nails consists of a tough protein called keratin, which is high in sulfur, whereas connective tissue and cartilage contain proteins with flexible sulfur bonds, giving the structure its flexibility. With age, the flexible tissues in your body tend to lose their elasticity, leading to sagging and wrinkling of skin, stiff muscles and painful joints.

A shortage of sulfur likely contributes to these age-related problems.

In addition to bonding proteins, sulfur is also required for the proper structure and biological activity of enzymes. If you don’t have sufficient amounts of sulfur in your body the enzymes cannot function properly, which can cascade into a number of health problems as without biologically active enzymes, your metabolic processes cannot function properly.

Sulfur also plays an important role in:

Your body’s electron transport system, as part of iron/sulfur proteins in mitochondria, the energy factories of your cells

Vitamin-B thiamine (B1) and biotin conversion, which in turn are essential for converting carbohydrates into energy

Synthesizing important metabolic intermediates, such as glutathione

Proper insulin function. The insulin molecule consists of two amino acid chains connected to each other by sulfur bridges, without which the insulin cannot perform its biological activity

Detoxification

The featured study looked at a broad scope of overlapping metabolic pathways in order to determine which ones may be affected by insufficient intake of dietary sulfur. They also evaluated the modes of action of a variety of sulfur-containing dietary supplements, including chondroitin and glucosamine, commonly used to improve joint health.

According to the authors:

“Sulfur amino acids contribute substantially to the maintenance and integrity of the cellular systems by influencing cellular redox state and the capacity to detoxify toxic compounds, free radicals and reactive oxygen species.

… Sulfur containing metabolites, of which glutathione is a key exponent, merge in their functioning with many other compounds that play a major role in mechanisms which are receiving tremendous interests as parts of conventional and complementary medical care. These include the n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals such as Selenium, Zinc, Copper and Magnesium, vitamins E and C, antioxidants such as the proanthocyanidins and lipoic acid, many of which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and in the antioxidant cascade.

More and more evidence is accumulating and focusing on the cooperative role that glutathione and other sulfur metabolites play in the homeostatic control of these fundamental mechanisms.”

Turmeric and cinnamon combine to lower insulin and triglycerides triggered by high fat meals
avatar

(NaturalNews) Many spices such as turmeric and cinnamon are powerful antioxidants that continue to gain acceptance as natural nutrients able to assist human health and prevent chronic disease. Researchers from Penn State publishing in The Journal of Nutrition provide strong evidence that these potent spices provide a protective shield to reduce the body`s negative responses to eating high-fat meals. A diet filled with high-fat foods that have been fried or baked with trans fats increases oxidized LDL cholesterol levels and dangerous blood fats known as triglycerides. Turmeric and cinnamon taken before a high fat meal combine to lower the triglyceride response by as much as 30%, preventing a cascade of harmful metabolic events that lead to heart disease and diabetes.

Culinary spices have peaked interest among nutritional scientists in recent years as both turmeric and cinnamon exhibit powerful antioxidant properties that may halt dangerous metabolic imbalances prompted by poor dietary choices. To conduct the study, researchers added 14 grams of a combined turmeric-cinnamon spice blend to a 1200 calorie high-fat meal, and compared the results to a control group not receiving the spice mixture.

Blood samples were taken prior to the meal and then again at 30 minute intervals for the next three and a half hours after eating. Participants were tested again one week later, and the two groups were switched to verify the accuracy of the results. Researchers found that blood levels of insulin were reduced by 21% and triglycerides dropped 31% in response to the turmeric-cinnamon mix.

The study authors found that the spices significantly improved two critical metabolic markers that are associated with increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. They commented “Adding spices to the meal significantly increased the ferric reducing antioxidant power, such that postprandial increases following the spiced meal were 2-fold greater than after the control meal.” They also found that the two spices interact synergistically and the impact was significantly greater when both spices were administered concurrently, compared to individual results.

Most health-conscious adults can benefit from a wide array of natural spices added to and consumed with many popular foods, regardless of specific dietary approach. Penn State authors concluded “The incorporation of spices into the diet may help normalize postprandial insulin and TG (triglyceride) and enhance antioxidant defenses.” Include turmeric and cinnamon to your favorite meals, or take a high quality supplement with meals to maximize your defense against metabolic dysfunction and heart disease.

How vitamin B-12 treats Alzheimer’s disease
avatar

(NaturalNews) Go ahead and tell someone that they should give their loved one, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) or Dementia, a dose of vitamin B12 that is 300 times the recommended daily intake, and they’ll probably cover their ears and run the other way or tell you they are afraid of “overdosing.”

In fact, most people don’t even know where vitamin B12 comes from, or what the body needs it for in the first place. On top of that, there are several myths about vitamin B12 that need to be dispelled, and several misconceptions of where it comes from in its most natural, most beneficial form.

There is a widespread belief that meat is the primary source of vitamin B-12; however, many nutritionists and their research reflect that cooked animal protein actually impairs the ability of the body to absorb this essential vitamin.

The vitamin is heat sensitive, and therefore normal cooking can destroy up to 90 percent of its usefulness. So then what foods do we turn to in order to find useful vitamin B-12? Although animal and dairy products are a “popular source”, the natural soil microbes and bacteria found on wild food, such as unwashed garden plants, are typically enough to supply many of your vitamin B12 needs.

In other words, organic vegetables, which most likely are not doused in pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, have exactly what the body needs. The “sterile” process of washing your vegetables is mainly known to be done to remove the chemical agents farmers use to keep away pests and bugs from destroying them, but that same “sterilizing process” also washes away soil microbes and bacteria that grow on raw fruits and vegetables, which our bodies need to duplicate in the intestinal tract for proper “assimilation” of vitamin B-12 to take place.

The ultimate source of all nature’s B-12 is manufactured by the friendly bacteria in an animal’s intestinal tract, and this is true for all vegetarian animals, including human beings.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease, which may have its beginnings rooting from a deficiency of vitamin B-12. Humans are born with serum levels of B-12 at about 2,000 pg/ml. This level often declines steadily throughout life, giving “credit” to common Western diet.

If consumers and natural medicine advocates can keep an open mind when addressing AD, we give our loved ones a fair chance at stopping AD in its tracks and possibly reversing dementia, and according to recent research, the earlier you address the problem, the better fighting chance you have of reducing or even defeating it.

In the early 1980′s, my grandmother Esther began showing signs and symptoms of dementia. At the time, I was about 13 years old, and when my parents brought me to visit her at my Aunt’s home, my grandmother barely recognized me.

My father said she was having problems with her memory, and then she actually walked us into a bathroom as she offered to show us her “bedroom.” Within two years, she did not recognize even her closest family members, including her husband. It was a total nightmare for the entire family, and Grandma Ester lived liked this for over ten years.

Could vitamin B-12 have been the remedy? I wish we had known about it then so we could have tried it. So clear the clouds of doubt you have about vitamin B-12. If it can’t hurt, and can only help, why wouldn’t you try it?

It’s water soluble, so if you take “too much,” your body will simply excrete the excess. There are no proven side effects. So, if a simple at home nutritional program could actually save your loved one from a degenerative disease that is considered “worse than death,” why wouldn’t you try it?
