|SCIENCE.naturalnews.com allows you to explore the scientific literature by almost any keyword or concept imaginable. Over 7,000 concepts — including disease names, drug names and nutrients — have been indexed across the entire library of scientific literature. Each concept is also statistically related to other concepts so that you can find hidden relationships in the science. For example, studies on “milk” are most frequently related to the concept of “allergies.”You can see all the studies on “milk” at this page:
And you can see all the studies on “allergies” at this page:
Or, better yet, you can see all the studies on “milk and allergies” at this page:
There are tens of thousands of other examples of such relationships found throughout the website. SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is the first and only system in the world to discover and publish these relationships across the scientific literature.
Share, comment and link
In addition to being able to easily discover important relationships among millions of scientific studies, SCIENCE.naturalnews.com allows you to share the studies, post comments on studies and link back to the studies using a shortcut link.
This makes it easy to share fascinating new science with your friends, such as this study that reveals howchlorella causes cancer cells to commit suicide(apoptosis and DNA damage to cancer cells):
Or check out this study on the fact that everyday hamburgers contain as little as 2% actual meat, with the rest being water and fillers:
Created and programmed by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
I created SCIENCE.naturalnews.com to provide an easy-to-use tool that would allow consumers, bloggers, writers and researchers to easily located scientific answers to common questions about nutrition, foods, pharmaceuticals and more.
Based on data provided by the taxpayer-funded National Library of Medicine, SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is being launched with three million scientific studies and is on track to grow by one million new studies each week until it reaches the full capacity of all known scientific studies tracked by the NLM.
Within a few months, the entire body of published scientific papers available today will be found at SCIENCE.naturalnews.com, categorized and indexed into 24 commonsense categories such as “superfoods” or “heavy metals.”
SCIENCE.naturalnews.com uses advanced “signal detection” algorithms I personally developed here at Natural News, a natural health news and activism site that now reaches over 5.5 million unique visitors each month.
These algorithms allow us to discover hidden patterns in large sets of data, then to publish those patterns on the web so that millions of people around the world can benefit from the quantum leap in knowledge enabled by this technology. When you browse SCIENCE.naturalnews.com, you are in effectbypassing thousands of hours of research it might have traditionally taken to identify such patterns and relationships.
What used to take hundreds of hours of research can now be located in minutes. And when people ask you, “Well, what’s the proof that curcumin helps reverse cancer and arthritis,” you can easily find and share those pages:
Expect minor glitches: Still in beta state
Keep in mind that SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is in a beta state, and minor glitches should be expected.
Also, Google has not fully spidered the site yet, so searches won’t yet yield satisfying results. Over time, however, this will automatically improve, allowing you to use the front-page search function to find almost anything you wish.
In addition, we are constantly adding new concepts to the system. For example, in testing the site today I realized we never indexed the phrase, “kidney damage.” So I’m adding “kidney damage” to the vocabulary of the system so that it gets properly indexed and compared to other concepts. This will allow you to find lists of scientific studies on concepts like “kidney damage and cadmium.”
We’re also added classes of drugs to the system such as “beta blockers” and “antidepressants” so that you can search for side effects by drug classes, not just individual drug names.
The bottom line is that SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is off the ground and usable right now, and at the same time it’s going to keep getting better and more comprehensive in the weeks ahead.
SCIENCE made possible through your support
In launching this project, I want to thank all the Natural News readers, sponsors and store customers who made this project possible. The investment in this system was in the six-figures-plus range, and this will cost us just under $10,000 / month to keep online… and that’s just for starters. If traffic becomes large, that monthly bill will substantially increase.
This project was entirely funded by ad revenue and store sales. We do not apply for — nor accept — government grants of any kind. We engage in R&D and scientific endeavors because it is the right thing to do, relying on the entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and American ingenuity.
Keep in mind this announcement is just one of THREE key content announcements we are making this year. The next “content realm” announcement will be made public very soon, perhaps within two weeks. And the third major announcement will be made closer to the end of this calendar year (if we can keep the R&D on track).
All of these announcements offer extraordinary knowledge benefits to the public and place Natural News in a category all its own as the leader in not just news and activism content, but scientific knowledge that can help empower and inspire tens of millions of people all around the world.
Thank you for your continued support, and with that support, we will continue to march forward, unleashing extraordinary tools of knowledge and wisdom that help uplift humanity. You can help support this effort by using SCIENCE.naturalnews.com as a research and reference tool while linking to or sharing study pages found there.
Thank you for your continued support!
Sounds good—until you realize that CFL bulbs contain mercury, and mercury poses a significant cancer risk. A new study shows that CFL bulbs also emit high levels of ultraviolet radiation—specifically, UVC and UVA rays. In fact, the UV rays are so strong that they can actually burn skin and skin cells. Experts say the radiation could initiate cell death and cause skin cancer in its deadliest form—melanoma.
In every bulb the researchers tested, they found that the protective phosphor coating of the light bulb was cracked, allowing dangerous UV rays to escape. Healthy skin cells exposed to CFLs showed a decrease in their proliferation rate, an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, and a decrease in ability to contract collagen.
On top of that, it’s a sad fact of life that light bulbs break. How do you clean up the mercury after a bulb breaks? The Institute for Molecular and Nanoscale Innovation measured the release of mercury vapor from broken bulbs. They recorded concentrations near the bulb of up to 800 mcg/m3, which is eight times the average eight-hour occupational exposure limit allowed by OSHA (100 mcg/m3).
Even more shocking, the recommended limit for children is a mere 0.2 mcg/m3. A child exposed to a broken CFL bulb will receive eight thousand times the recommended amount of mercury vapor!
A broken 13-watt CFL bulb will only have released 30% of its mercury a full four days after it is broken—the remainder is trapped in the bulb. So picking up shards with your bare hands or leaving them in poorly ventilated room while you ponder the best disposal method is a particularly bad idea.
Unfortunately, there is no good solution for cleaning up after a broken CFL bulb. Researchers at Brown are testing a cloth made with a nanomaterial (nanoselim) that can capture mercury emissions for proper disposal. But until this is commercially available, it is best to avoid CFLs altogether. And how will we dispose of the clean-up cloth?
General Electric claims that CFLs don’t produce a hazardous amount of UV radiation, and that UV is far less than the amount produced by natural daylight. The truth is that all compact fluorescent lights bulbs contain mercury vapor. Once that vapor is hit with an electric current, it emits a great number of UV rays. UV rays are theoretically absorbed by the layer of phosphor that coats the bulbs—but the signature twisted spiral shape makes these bulbs more prone to cracks in the phosphor, which dramatically increases UV/mercury exposure. Researchers found cracks in almost all bulbs purchased from retail stores, indicating that it is a standard design flaw of these bulbs.
CFL bulbs contains other cancer-causing chemicals as well. German scientists found that several different chemicals and toxins were released when CFLs are turned on, including naphthalene (which has been linked to cancer in animals) and styrene (which has been declared “a likely human carcinogen”). A sort of electrical smog develops around these lamps, which could be dangerous.
CFLs are supposedly better for the environment, but according to the Association of Lighting and Mercury Recyclers, 98% of CFLs end up in landfills—creating a mercury build-up that can escape into our soil and waterways.
We’re happy that the federal government is tackling environmental problems, but this “solution” is especially short-sighted—and not unlike the national smart meter push, is creating serious health risks in the long-term.
Worse, soon consumers won’t have the option to buy incandescent lights—they simply won’t be available. The government hasn’t placed an outright ban on incandescent light bulbs. Section 321 of EISA mandates higher efficiency standards for general service lamps. But these standards are high enough that most commonly used incandescent bulbs just won’t meet the new requirements. EISA will effectively eliminate 40-, 60-, 75-, and 100-watt incandescent bulbs. The new efficiency levels will be in full force by 2014.
Even the United Nations has acknowledged the problem of mercury in CFL bulbs, and has instated a ban on certain types of CFLs. We won’t know the full implications of that ban until the treaty is made publically available.
The good news is that CFLs are not the only energy-efficient bulbs out there. There are also light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are mercury-free—though LEDs emit blue light, which can be disruptive to sleep, as we noted in our 2012 article.
Action Alert! Please contact your legislators immediately and call for a repeal of the ban on incandescent lights. Tell them about the cancer risks and the lack of proper disposal methods.
Oil Pulling: A Healing Therapy For Dozens of Diseases | REALfarmacy.com | Healthy News and Information
Oil Pulling: A Healing Therapy For Dozens of Diseases
Oil pulling is an age old Ayurveda process which works on the root cause of symptoms and helps the body in its healing process, hence takes significant amount of time in giving you the desired results. The cost is the price of a daily spoonful of coconut oil–cheaper than even a vitamin tablet. Yet it is one of the most powerful forms of therapeutic techniques available.
Oil pulling or oil swishing involves swishing oil in the mouth Ayurvedic literature describes oilpulling as capable of both improving oral health and treating serious and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or asthma. According to Dr. F. Karach, M.D, oilpulling is very simple, completely harmless, and inexpensive therapy which totally heals head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.
The oil is “worked” in the mouth by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. It is done one to three times a day on an empty stomach. The best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but can be done before any meal. The used oil is discarded and the mouth rinsed out with water. The oil is never swallowed because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.
Oil pulling works the same way as cleaning soaps. Soaps are basically fats that attract germs in order to clean. Oil pulling attracts germs and bacteria to ‘pull’ them out of your mouth. It cleans your gum line without damaging your gums. It has been known to cure problems with bad breath, and helps with gum inflammation. It can also help prevent and reverse tooth disease.
Scientific validations of the Ayurveda dental health practices could justify their incorporation into modern dental care. Publicity of these techniques using appropriate media would benefit the general population by giving more confidence in the ancient practices, thus preventing tooth decay and loss.
Oil pulling therapy can be done using oils like sunflower oil or sesame oil. The sesame plant (Sesamum indicum) of the Pedaliaceae family has been considered a gift of nature to mankind for its nutritional qualities and desirable health effects. Sesame oil is considered to be the queen of oil seed crops because of its beneficiary effects. However, coconut oil is the most pleasant inside the mouth and many suggest the most effective.
Release your fear-based limitations in just moments with free Tapping techniques! This ancient technique of stimulating the body’s meridians and speaking affirmations will give you powerful transformational results in trouble areas of your life. Tapping helps neutralize unconscious, fear-based limiting beliefs quickly and efficiently.
Begin by doing the more ‘formal’ Tapping protocol. Most subconscious fears can be released this way. For stubborn fears, use these free complementary techniques that subtly dig deeper into the more hidden recesses of the subconscious.
These are variations that will supercharge your practice by involving both hemispheres of the brain and both sides of the body for a very powerful holistic approach to internal problem-solving.
Emotions, Beliefs, and Hiding Places
ALL of your experiences are stored in your body (not just your brain). Tapping sequences performed with the opposite hand and in different physical positions can help uncover habitual emotional material that might be hiding under habitual physical actions. Essentially, your thought habits have their own ‘traditional’ hiding places and unless you introduce different physical actions, these hiding places may go unnoticed.
Free Tapping Techniques
The following free Tapping techniques are interesting ways to mix up your routine. Some of these tips are so simple you may be tempted to dismiss them – but remember that sometimes, the best solutions are the simple ones!
1. Mix it up! Tap with the opposite hand. If you’re right-handed, use your left hand for a day when you do your tapping exercises. This helps integrate the emotional material by engaging the entire brain and both sides of the body.
Another variation of this is to do cross-over tapping, so that you are tapping with both hands at the same time, but each hand taps on the opposite side of the body.
Experiment with fun new ways to integrate Tapping into your day. Try Tapping standing up; lying down; while walking; or on your side. You might notice new material coming to the surface to be released as you change your physical position.
Remember, you may have to go about uncovering your hidden fears in unusual ways so that you don’t allow the habitual hiding places to go unnoticed and unexcavated.
2. Refuse to let go. This might sound counter-intuitive but it works. Your subconscious has been programmed by the influence of people important to you, throughout your life (and perpetuated by you). So to get over the emotional resistance of letting go of your programming, do one full round of Tapping where adamantly refusing to let it go (you are acknowledging that you have been refusing to let go of this belief for a very long time). Then, move on to releasing the belief.
3. See yourself Tapping. Tapping in front of the mirror has some interesting and effective results: you get a visual of yourself as the technique creates subtle changes in your body. You’ll notice changes in skin color, muscle tone, even the sparkle in your eyes. Take note of these – they are physical manifestations of a change in your inner atmosphere!
You have a strong connection to yourself when you see yourself in the mirror. You can smile at yourself while you perform your Tapping exercise and see the physical changes of releasing your fears.
4. Tap and Sing. Singing your affirmations helps activate the right brain hemisphere for a more effective imprinting process.
5. Thank You Tapping: this is a powerful way to release blockages! Don’t underestimate the power of a simple “thank you” to release something you’ve been holding on to. If you can give heartfelt thanks for the difficulties in your life by learning from them, you can thank them and release the emotional burden of hanging on to them.
6. Photo Tapping: Tapping while looking at old photos helps unearth old emotions you may have thought were dealt with. In particular, Tapping while looking at pictures of yourself in high school can help uncover and resolve many repressed emotions. The teen years are often huge sources of emotional turmoil and the rise of many self-limiting beliefs.
These are just a few examples of how you can creatively use free Tapping techniques to suit your needs.
Global cost of chronic disease treatment to top $47 trillion by 2030, more than triple current US national debt
(NaturalNews) Between now and 2030, the aggregate global cost of treating the five most common, non-infectious diseases — cancer, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and mental health disorders — will top $47 trillion, according to a new report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF). And experts warn that if nothing is done to curb this escalating healthcare crisis, the global economy will most certainly collapse due to insurmountable financial insolvency.
To put this astronomical $47 trillion figure into perspective, consider the fact that the current US national debt is just under $15 trillion — this means that at the current rate of growth, global healthcare costs associated with treating just these five diseases will exceed the US national debt by more than 300 percent in less than 20 years.
Put another way, the entire global gross domestic product (GDP), which represents the final value of all goods and services produced, was $63 trillion in 2010. Based on WEF figures, global treatment costs for the “big five” non-communicable diseases will represent a shocking 75 percent of the current global GDP by 2030.
In other words, no economy will be able to survive this approaching doomsday scenario, which is why the world’s current course must change as soon as possible. WEF spokesmen and others commenting on the report highlight increasing taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, and encouraging less consumption of “salt and trans fats,” as a helpful solution for reducing such costs. But such approaches are largely simplistic and do not fully address the root causes of non-communicable disease.
Truth be told, modern society in many industrialized nations is riddled with toxic chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and pollutants that are wreaking havoc on both environmental and human health. The nature of genetically-modified organisms (GMO) in the food supply, reliance on processed foods as part of the Standard American Diet (SAD), and an overall complacency among many towards exercise, are also some of the primary factors contributing to this modern health crisis.
We here at NaturalNews, however, will continue to stress the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, which includes eating a whole food-based diet rich in disease-preventing nutrients. Superfoods, organic produce, pasture-based meats, healthy oils, medicinal herbs — integrating these and many other health-promoting foods into mainstream society are a surefire way to reduce the disease epidemic, and significantly reduce the global healthcare bill in the process.
(NaturalNews) One of the biggest health myths is the idea that a person can get all the nutrition s/he needs by simply eating a balanced diet. The truth is that it is next to impossible to get even the minimal RDA amounts of the limited number of vitamins and minerals on the RDA list, much less the amounts of all the many nutrients needed for optimal health from diet alone.
Decades of over-farming has left the world’s top soils severely depleted of essential minerals. For the most part, the only minerals replaced have been those needed for optimal growth and not vital minerals such as magnesium which are needed for optimal health.
Foods on our grocers’ shelves frequently have had true nutrition processed out (and often harmful additives processed in to enhance shelf life, taste, color and texture). In many instances most of the claimed nutrition comes from added synthetic petrochemical vitamins and crushed rock minerals – which are vastly inferior to natural vitamins and minerals found in food.
This author has repeatedly challenged balanced-diet proponents to devise a weekly 2000 to 2500 calorie a day diet plan which provides all of just the measly nutrient amounts on the limited RDA chart. Thus far no one has come close. Keep in mind that in many instances RDA amounts of vitamins and minerals are merely the theoretical amounts needed to prevent deficiency-related illness. Besides the fact that RDA amounts are often far below the optimal amounts, the RDA list does not include literally hundreds of other valuable nutrients which we have evolved and adapted to utilize.
If it is so easy to get all the nutrition needed from diet alone, why is it that up to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium? For that matter, why is it that most of us are deficient in other vital nutrients as well – even those of us who regularly eat a so-called balanced diet?
Another related myth is the idea that doctors are good sources of information and advice about diet and nutrition. In most instances, mainstream doctors are woefully deficient in information about diet and nutrition. Doctors are taught in medical schools where the primary funding source is the pharmaceutical industry and where curriculum is controlled by the AMA. Not surprisingly, doctors are taught that the way to treat illness is to prescribe drug company medications and to perform mainstream medical treatments. What they are not taught is the vital role that diet and proper nutrition play in our health.
One longtime doctor turned naturopath told this author that during his entire mainstream education he had but one single lecture on diet and nutrition. Other doctors, including more recent graduates, confirmed that their educational experience was much the same when it came to diet and nutrition.
In the world of mainstream health misinformation about vegetable and fruit servings, a serving of a fortified “fruit drink” is considered equal to a bowl of fresh organic blueberries and an order of french fries is equal to a bowl of fresh organic spinach.
A good plan for obtaining plenty of nutrition to insure a maximum of good health and a minimum of illness is:
1. Eat a healthy and varied nutrient-dense diet with as many fresh organic items as possible.
2. Avoid junk foods, processed foods and inorganic meats – especially processed meat products.
3. Utilize supplemental items such as organic superfood powders and whole food derived nutrients to insure that you get all the vital kinds and amounts of nutrition needed.
“Build a Good Natural Foundation for the Best Health and Longevity”
(NaturalNews) Did you know that technology can seriously damage your health? Tragically most people still don’t get it. The World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) states very clearly that there are serious health risks from current exposure levels to electronic fields coming from wi-fi, laptops, mobile phones and ipads. Exposure to them increases the risk of cancer, brain tumours, autism, diabetes, chronic fatigue, hay fever and depression.
They state that we are being kept in the dark about these effects due to the fact that “present sources of funding bias the interpretation of findings towards rejection of evidence of possible health risks”
Is it more than just a coincidence that the health of billions of people are being affected since the introduction of technology in the 1980′s.
A staggering 220 million people now suffer from diabetes. This is set to rise to 400 million by the year 2030.
Do you think that it can’t happen to you or your children? Think again. Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Approximately 70 million people worldwide are affected by autism. This number has increased 6,000% in the past 20 years.
Why have we suddenly become intolerant to food? Is it just the chemicals we put in our food that have caused it? THINK AGAIN.
Over 270 million people in the world now suffer from food allergies. Approximately 3 million of them are children under the age of 18. That is a 400% increase worldwide in 20 years.
1 in 4 European children under the age of 10 suffers from an allergy.
Potentially fatal peanut allergies now affect one in 70 children.
An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from Asthma, with 250,000 deaths attributed to the disease. That is a 300% increase in asthma in the last 20 years.
ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION
About 10 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hypersensitivity Disorder). Worldwide there was a 400% increase in ADHD in the last 20 years.
2.5m people now suffer from Multiple Sclerosis
ONE IN FIVE people in the world suffers from hay fever which is expected to triple between now and 2030.
ARE YOU LISTENING
Planning to have children, – you had better hurry up. The average man has lost 53% of sperm production over the last 50 years. At the present rate of decline it will take 70 years before the sperm count goes to zero.
31% of pregnancies now end in miscarriage. This number increased between 2005 and 2009 by 15%. In the same period 25% more women received treatment for infertility.
80% of the world’s population suffer from sleeping disorders. In the U.S. 40 million people suffer from some type of sleeping disorder.
COULD IT JUST BE A COINCIDENCE THAT:
1. MOBILE PHONE SALES ROSE FROM 50 MILLION IN 1995 TO 5 BILLION BY 2010
2. THERE WERE 1 BILLION PC’S IN USE AROUND THE WORLD IN 2008
3. THIS NUMBER WILL DOUBLE BY 2013 TO 2 BILLION
4. BY 2012 THERE ARE EXPECTED TO BE 14 BILLION DEVICES CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET
5 6.1 TRILLION TEXT MESSAGES WERE SAID TO BE SENT IN 2010
Do you want to know who benefits from all of our bad health – drug companies!
One of the world’s largest drug companies, Pfizer, saw profits rise from $10.02 Billion dollars in 1995 to $67.8 billion dollars in 2010.
Worldwide sales of drugs in 2012 were a staggering $830 billion dollars.
Global Pharmaceutical sales are expected to reach $1.1 Trillion dollars by 2014
DO YOU STILL NOT GET IT
Technology can damage your health and only one group of people benefit. IT IS NOT YOU.
Anybody could be one of the next two billion sufferers, your sister, brother, mother, father, grandparent, grandchild, friend or colleague.
OR EVEN YOU.

(NaturalNews) Many spices such as turmeric and cinnamon are powerful antioxidants that continue to gain acceptance as natural nutrients able to assist human health and prevent chronic disease. Researchers from Penn State publishing in The Journal of Nutrition provide strong evidence that these potent spices provide a protective shield to reduce the body`s negative responses to eating high-fat meals. A diet filled with high-fat foods that have been fried or baked with trans fats increases oxidized LDL cholesterol levels and dangerous blood fats known as triglycerides. Turmeric and cinnamon taken before a high fat meal combine to lower the triglyceride response by as much as 30%, preventing a cascade of harmful metabolic events that lead to heart disease and diabetes.
Culinary spices have peaked interest among nutritional scientists in recent years as both turmeric and cinnamon exhibit powerful antioxidant properties that may halt dangerous metabolic imbalances prompted by poor dietary choices. To conduct the study, researchers added 14 grams of a combined turmeric-cinnamon spice blend to a 1200 calorie high-fat meal, and compared the results to a control group not receiving the spice mixture.
Blood samples were taken prior to the meal and then again at 30 minute intervals for the next three and a half hours after eating. Participants were tested again one week later, and the two groups were switched to verify the accuracy of the results. Researchers found that blood levels of insulin were reduced by 21% and triglycerides dropped 31% in response to the turmeric-cinnamon mix.
The study authors found that the spices significantly improved two critical metabolic markers that are associated with increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. They commented “Adding spices to the meal significantly increased the ferric reducing antioxidant power, such that postprandial increases following the spiced meal were 2-fold greater than after the control meal.” They also found that the two spices interact synergistically and the impact was significantly greater when both spices were administered concurrently, compared to individual results.
Most health-conscious adults can benefit from a wide array of natural spices added to and consumed with many popular foods, regardless of specific dietary approach. Penn State authors concluded “The incorporation of spices into the diet may help normalize postprandial insulin and TG (triglyceride) and enhance antioxidant defenses.” Include turmeric and cinnamon to your favorite meals, or take a high quality supplement with meals to maximize your defense against metabolic dysfunction and heart disease.
(NaturalNews) The array of undiscovered health benefits afforded by high vitamin D intake is vast thanks to several new studies linking deficiency in this important hormone to diabetes.
One study published in the journal Diabetes Care explains that a simple 25 nanomole per liter (nmol/L), or 10 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), increase in blood levels of vitamin D results in a roughly 24 percent reduction in diabetes risk, while another study similarly reveals a correlation between high blood levels of vitamin D and reduced risk of diabetes.
Dr. Ken Sikaris and his colleague Zhong Lu, both of which are pathologists at Melbourne Pathology in Australia, tested the blood levels of 5,200 participants as part of their research. After accounting for more than ten outside risk factors that may affect outcomes, the duo found that participants with the highest blood levels of vitamin D had a significantly reduced risk of developing type-2 diabetes compared to those with the lowest levels.
“It’s hard to underestimate how important this could be,” said Dr. Sikaris concerning the findings, inferring that vitamin D is an essential weapon in the fight against diabetes.
In a related study, physician Anastassios Pittas from Tufts University evaluated 2,039 people with high blood sugar levels as part of her three year study, and found that every 12.5 nmol/L (5 ng/mL) increase in vitamin D levels resulted in an eight percent decreased risk of developing diabetes.
Participants with the highest third of vitamin D levels, above 75 nmol/L (30 ng/mL), were also 38 percent less likely to develop diabetes than those in the lowest third, which averaged 32 nmol/L (13 ng/mL).
“There are indications that vitamin D is of importance in glucose metabolism, and that supplementation with vitamin D may increase both insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity,” writes a report at ClinicalTrials.gov in response to this and other vitamin D research.
The Vitamin D Council maintains that healthy blood levels of vitamin D fall between 125 – 200 nmol/L (50 – 80 ng/mL), which can be achieved through regular sunlight exposure and supplementation with vitamin D3. To learn more, visit:
(NaturalNews) Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb, most widely used to aid the mind and body in adapting to stress. It is indigenous to India, used and studied by Ayurvedic practitioners for centuries. Ashwagandha helps its users to remain calm during times of stress whether emotional or physical, as with hard labor or vigorous exercise. Ashwagandha is a powerful soothing tonic, useful to restore vitality and prolong longevity. Its anti-spasmotic effects have been used in the treatment of asthma. Traditionally, ashwagandha is used in pregnancy to relax the uterus to stop miscarriages, also known as spontaneous abortions.
Two Clinical Studies Show Ashwagandha`s Adaptability
The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine released a study in 2009 which was performed to determine the efficacy of ashwagandha as an immune booster. Five participants consumed ashwagandha extract twice a day for four days. Blood samples were drawn before and after the study was done, plus once at 24 hours. Across the sampling, there was a significant change in immune cell activity at the end of the four day study. The conclusion of the report was that “more study is warranted.”
In another clinical study, the traditional use of ashwagandha as a “rasayana,” an herb known to promote health, prevent disease, and promote longevity, provided the motivation to determine whether ashwagandha could be used as an alternative to antidepressants and anti-anxiety pharmaceutical drugs. A team of researchers in the Department of Pharmacology at Bandaras Hindu University, led by S.K. Bhattacharya, published their findings in Phytomedicine, in December of 2000. The researchers found that ashwagandha does stabilize mood in both anxiety and depression in rat models.
Herbalists Widely Recommend Ashwagandha for Adrenal Support
The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. They secrete some sex hormones, control blood glucose, and regulate sodium levels in the blood. They also secrete epinephrine and norepinephrine, the stress-reducing hormones.
If the human body is exposed to long term physical or emotional stress, the adrenals can malfunction. This leads to adrenal fatigue or exhaustion. Just a few symptoms of adrenal fatigue include feeling exhausted all the time, only having energy at night, craving sweet or salty foods, feeling overwhelmed and experiencing brain fog, low immune function, low blood pressure and extreme sensitivity to cold.
Besides avoiding stimulants such as caffeine and switching to a low-sugar diet, ashwagandha may be taken to help restore balance to the adrenal glands and the entire body. Herbalists recommend taking between one and three tablespoons of ashwagandha daily. Referring to its taste, ashwagandha is called “the sweat of a horse.” Because of the taste, some herbalists recommend taking ashwagandha with organic apple cider vinegar and others suggest taking it with a glass of raw, unpasteurized milk.

(NaturalNews) Deodorant is an essential toiletry that most Americans have in their medicine cabinet today. Many are still unaware of the hidden dangers in the active ingredients of modern day deodorant. They continue to use these potentially hazardous chemicals on their underarms as a way of reducing perspiration and odor.
The primary ingredient used in most antiperspirants is aluminum. Aluminum is a metal, which is used in antiperspirants to help block the sweat from escaping the pores. Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer in women and has also been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Several studies have shown a link between increasing antiperspirant use and rising rates of female breast cancer and prostate cancer in men. However, the FDA has not committed to classifying it as a carcinogen. Their position remains one of “wait and see” as more definitive studies are released.
Parabens are a family of synthetic preservatives that are often found in deodorants as well. In fact, parabens are contained in an alarming amount of our body care products. A random sampling of 100 human urine specimens performed by the CDC showed that all 100 contained parabens. This demonstrates the high absorption rate of chemicals we place on our skin.
The largest concern is that the absorption of these chemicals will disrupt our delicate hormonal balance. This can lead to things like early puberty in children and an increased risk of hormonal cancers. Paraben exposure has also been linked to birth defects and organ toxicity.
Propylene glycol is another common ingredient that is used in antiperspirants and deodorants. This is a petroleum based material that is used to soften cosmetic products due to its slick consistency. It is a cheap way to make skin care products more easily applicable to the skin.
The argument that propylene glycol is safe in small amounts has been questioned by consumer safety advocates. In large quantities, studies have shown that it can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver and heart.
This chemical is even found in many of the processed foods we eat today. Logical thought follows that decreasing our exposure to propylene glycol is the prudent thing to do. It is for this reason that using skin care products that are propylene glycol free is becoming popular in health conscious circles.
Phthalates are another class of chemicals that are often used in deodorants and antiperspirants that you may want to avoid. Phthalates are used in cosmetics, synthetic fragrances, plastics, body care products and medical goods. They help to dissolve other ingredients and to create a better consistency.
The problem with phthalates is that they have been linked to a variety of health issues. High phthalate blood and urine levels in women of child bearing age have been linked to a higher risk of birth defects. This suggests that phthalates may disrupt hormone receptors as well as increase the likelihood of cell mutation.
Triclosan is another common ingredient included in commercial deodorants. It is utilized as the odor killing part of antiperspirants for its anti-bacterial properties. It is also commonly used in antibacterial soaps, hand wipes and gels.
Triclosan is actually classified as a pesticide by the FDA. It is also classified as a probable carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. This classification has prompted some companies to remove it from their products. However, it still can be found as an ingredient in some formulas.
Diet Soda Can Increase Your Waist Size By Up to 500 Percent | Dr. Joseph Mercola on Natural Health Products and Articles
Because of its high sugar content, soda is known to be one of the unhealthiest beverages you can drink. But if you believe that drinking sugar-free diet soda is better, here’s something for you to think about: a recent study presented at an American Diabetes Association meeting revealed that people who drank two or more diet sodas daily had a 500 percent greater increase in waist size!
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio followed 474 diet soda drinkers for almost a decade and found that their waistlines expanded by 70 percent compared to non-diet soda drinkers. Those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had the biggest waistlines. (Link)
Why Diet Soda Does Not Support Weight Management
In 2005, a team led by study co-author Sharon Fowler found that each can of diet soda you drink in a day increases your obesity risk by 41 percent.
Diet soda contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which may contain zero calories but can’t fool your body and brain. When your body detects that you’re consuming something sweet, it expects that it contains calories. Since artificial sweeteners don’t provide calories, they can cause distortions in your biochemistry that may result in weight gain, Dr. Joseph Mercola explains.
Your brain knows the difference between sugar and an artificial sweetener, which tends to increase activity in your brain’s pleasure center even though it provides lower actual satisfaction. This causes your body to crave more artificial sweeteners – as well as real sugar – because your brain is not satisfied at the cellular level by the sugar imposter.
Diet Soda and Cardiovascular Disease
Another study presented earlier this year at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2011 suggested that diet soda can increase your risk of stroke.
Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Columbia University followed more than 1,000 volunteers for over nine years. About 900 of the participants said they did not consume any diet soda, while about 160 drank one or more diet sodas daily. (Link)
At the end of the study, the researchers noted that diet soda consumption and salt intake increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other deadly vascular conditions.
How to Quit Your Soda Habit
Eliminating your diet soda consumption is easier said than done – artificial sweeteners are addicting and have “positive reinforcing effects,” according to Dr. Martin Paulus, one of the authors of a study that compared the taste pathways of sugar and artificial sweeteners. “Humans will work for it, like for other foods, alcohol, and even drugs of abuse. Whenever you have that, there is a potential that a subgroup of people … will have a chance of getting addicted,” he says.
Your soda cravings may have an underlying emotional component. Dr. Mercola recommends the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), particularly Turbo Tapping, an EFT tool that allows you to resolve emotional aspects of an addictive problem in a short period of time.
After you have addressed your diet soda addiction, you can use the natural sweetener stevia, which is 300 times sweeter than sugar, has zero calories, and does not cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Dr. Mercola uses liquid stevia that comes in flavors like English Toffee and French Vanilla, which can be added to seltzer water to produce a healthy soda alternative.

You’ve probably heard of enzymes, and you probably already know they are important for your digestion. But you may not be aware of just how necessary enzymes are to every cell in your body—not just for digestion but for ALL your physiological processes.
Enzymes are composed of amino acids and are secreted by your body to help catalyze functions that would normally not occur at physiological temperatures. They literally make magic happen and are absolutely vital to your life.
More than 3,000 different enzymes have been identified, and some experts believe there may be another 50,000 we have yet to discover. Each enzyme has a different function—like 3,000 specialized keys cut to fit 3,000 different locks. In this analogy, the locks are biochemical reactions.
Enzymes drive biological processes necessary for your body to build raw materials, circulate nutrients, eliminate unwanted chemicals, and the myriad of other biochemical processes that go on without your even thinking about it.
For starters, here are just some of the activities in your body requiring enzymes:
Absorption of oxygen
Fighting infections and healing wounds
Getting nutrients into your cells
Carrying away toxic wastes
Breaking down fats in your blood, regulating cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Dissolving blood clots
Proper hormone regulation
Slowing the aging process
And small amounts of enzymes can affect profound changes! Enzymes are the catalysts that cause many essential biochemical reactions to happen—but they are not “used up” IN the reaction. They merely assist—meaning, they accelerate reactions—sometimes to a mind-boggling several million reactions per second!
Enzymes lower the amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur. Without them, some reactions simply would not function in your body.
But enzymes don’t work alone.
Enzymes rely on other elements to accomplish their tasks, such as certain vitamins and minerals. These elements are called “coenzymes.”
You are probably already familiar with one of these—coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is found in the mitochondria (power centers) of your cells where it is involved in making ATP, every cell’s principal energy source. Another example is magnesium, which participates in over 300 enzyme reactions.

(NaturalNews) Binge eating of sugary or fatty junk foods brought on by periods of emotional stress or otherwise may be remedied by consuming saturated fat, finds new research. The reason that many are drawn to junk foods in the first place is a nutritional deficiency. Cravings for chocolate may indicate a magnesium deficiency, for example. Similarly, your body may desire saturated fat during your craving for junk food.
The study is one of the first to show that when it comes to food affecting your emotions, taste isn`t everything. Instead, it is “even more rooted in our biology,” says Giovanni Cizza, M.D., an obesity and neuroendocrinology researcher at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, in Bethesda, Maryland, who was not involved in the research. In fact, saturated fat may affect the brain by triggering the release of hormones. The connection between the brain and the gut has been well established in the past, with studies indicating that gut health may actually be directly linked to mental health and stability. Poor gut health has been found to be a major factor in the development of depression and even bipolar disorder.
Published in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, they studied 12 volunteers, who were considered healthy and of normal weight. Researchers infused one of two “meal” options into the stomachs of the volunteers: a solution of saturated fatty acids or a saline control solution. After giving the volunteers their meals, researchers played sad classical music and showed them images of faces with sad expressions — two techniques that have been proven to be effective in inducing sadness in the past. Afterwards, mood surveys indicated that volunteers, who had ingested the saturated fatty acid solution, found the sad music to be far less depressing than those, who were given the saline control solution.
MRI scans taken during the study confirmed the findings; participants, who had consumed the fatty solution, exhibited less activity in parts of the brain that are involved in sadness. The researchers were excited to find that saturated fats helped to curb negative emotions, and the real world implications were quite hopeful as well. Those struggling with straining emotional times, who are often driven to consume health-damaging junk foods, can help ward off these cravings through extra consumption of saturated fat.
Great sources of saturated fat include: coconut oil, organic raw certified butter, organic ground beef, dark chocolate (70% or more cacao content), salmon, and organic eggs.
(NaturalNews) Would you be willing to make six simple lifestyle changes if you knew you could lower your risk of developing Alzheimer`s disease by 50%? Researchers publishing the result of a study in the journal Lancet Neurology found that the exploding incidence of this horrific form of dementia is due in large part to lifestyle changes involving diet, physical activity and education. Alzheimer`s disease incidence is expected to triple over the next forty years, meaning that millions of new cases could be prevented by modifying controllable lifestyle risks. Scientists listed the six most important factors that can be modified in an effort to significantly lower Alzheimer`s disease risk.
Researchers analyzed dozens of Alzheimer`s studies from around the world that examined hundreds of thousands of participants to determine why this insidious disease is growing at an unprecedented rate. Dr. Deborah Barnes, lead scientist performing the review, concluded that there are six significant and modifiable risk factors that contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Her team listed the factors in descending order of magnitude: low education, smoking, physical inactivity, depression, mid-life hypertension, diabetes and mid-life obesity.
As a group, these risk factors account for 54% of the diagnosed cases of Alzheimer`s disease in the United States, accounting for 2.9 million individuals. Dr. Barnes commented on the findings, “What`s exciting is that this suggests that some very simple lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity and quitting smoking, could have a tremendous impact on preventing Alzheimer`s and other dementias in the United States and worldwide.” The team will now work to determine if the relationship between each identified risk factor is casual or specifically attributable to disease development.
Further research into contributing factors that increase risk for developing Alzheimer`s dementia are published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. Scientists compared physical activity duration and intensity with the development of cognitive impairment known to be a precursor to the memory-robbing illness. As participants` energy expenditure increased, the rate of cognitive decline decreased. The amount of exercise equivalent to a brisk, 30-minute walk every day was associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment.
Alzheimer`s disease cases have multiplied exponentially over the past 50 years, leading health-minded practitioners and followers to ask for an explanation. Our lifestyle has changed dramatically during this time period, and diet, physical activity and diseases of excess have hindered the forward progress of our cognitive health. Adopting a natural diet low in sugar and refined carbohydrates combined with regular and moderate physical activity can slash many risk factors associated with Alzheimer`s dementia.
