|SCIENCE.naturalnews.com allows you to explore the scientific literature by almost any keyword or concept imaginable. Over 7,000 concepts — including disease names, drug names and nutrients — have been indexed across the entire library of scientific literature. Each concept is also statistically related to other concepts so that you can find hidden relationships in the science. For example, studies on “milk” are most frequently related to the concept of “allergies.”You can see all the studies on “milk” at this page:
And you can see all the studies on “allergies” at this page:
Or, better yet, you can see all the studies on “milk and allergies” at this page:
There are tens of thousands of other examples of such relationships found throughout the website. SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is the first and only system in the world to discover and publish these relationships across the scientific literature.
Share, comment and link
In addition to being able to easily discover important relationships among millions of scientific studies, SCIENCE.naturalnews.com allows you to share the studies, post comments on studies and link back to the studies using a shortcut link.
This makes it easy to share fascinating new science with your friends, such as this study that reveals howchlorella causes cancer cells to commit suicide(apoptosis and DNA damage to cancer cells):
Or check out this study on the fact that everyday hamburgers contain as little as 2% actual meat, with the rest being water and fillers:
Created and programmed by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
I created SCIENCE.naturalnews.com to provide an easy-to-use tool that would allow consumers, bloggers, writers and researchers to easily located scientific answers to common questions about nutrition, foods, pharmaceuticals and more.
Based on data provided by the taxpayer-funded National Library of Medicine, SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is being launched with three million scientific studies and is on track to grow by one million new studies each week until it reaches the full capacity of all known scientific studies tracked by the NLM.
Within a few months, the entire body of published scientific papers available today will be found at SCIENCE.naturalnews.com, categorized and indexed into 24 commonsense categories such as “superfoods” or “heavy metals.”
SCIENCE.naturalnews.com uses advanced “signal detection” algorithms I personally developed here at Natural News, a natural health news and activism site that now reaches over 5.5 million unique visitors each month.
These algorithms allow us to discover hidden patterns in large sets of data, then to publish those patterns on the web so that millions of people around the world can benefit from the quantum leap in knowledge enabled by this technology. When you browse SCIENCE.naturalnews.com, you are in effectbypassing thousands of hours of research it might have traditionally taken to identify such patterns and relationships.
What used to take hundreds of hours of research can now be located in minutes. And when people ask you, “Well, what’s the proof that curcumin helps reverse cancer and arthritis,” you can easily find and share those pages:
Expect minor glitches: Still in beta state
Keep in mind that SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is in a beta state, and minor glitches should be expected.
Also, Google has not fully spidered the site yet, so searches won’t yet yield satisfying results. Over time, however, this will automatically improve, allowing you to use the front-page search function to find almost anything you wish.
In addition, we are constantly adding new concepts to the system. For example, in testing the site today I realized we never indexed the phrase, “kidney damage.” So I’m adding “kidney damage” to the vocabulary of the system so that it gets properly indexed and compared to other concepts. This will allow you to find lists of scientific studies on concepts like “kidney damage and cadmium.”
We’re also added classes of drugs to the system such as “beta blockers” and “antidepressants” so that you can search for side effects by drug classes, not just individual drug names.
The bottom line is that SCIENCE.naturalnews.com is off the ground and usable right now, and at the same time it’s going to keep getting better and more comprehensive in the weeks ahead.
SCIENCE made possible through your support
In launching this project, I want to thank all the Natural News readers, sponsors and store customers who made this project possible. The investment in this system was in the six-figures-plus range, and this will cost us just under $10,000 / month to keep online… and that’s just for starters. If traffic becomes large, that monthly bill will substantially increase.
This project was entirely funded by ad revenue and store sales. We do not apply for — nor accept — government grants of any kind. We engage in R&D and scientific endeavors because it is the right thing to do, relying on the entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and American ingenuity.
Keep in mind this announcement is just one of THREE key content announcements we are making this year. The next “content realm” announcement will be made public very soon, perhaps within two weeks. And the third major announcement will be made closer to the end of this calendar year (if we can keep the R&D on track).
All of these announcements offer extraordinary knowledge benefits to the public and place Natural News in a category all its own as the leader in not just news and activism content, but scientific knowledge that can help empower and inspire tens of millions of people all around the world.

Oil Pulling: A Healing Therapy For Dozens of Diseases | REALfarmacy.com | Healthy News and Information
Oil Pulling: A Healing Therapy For Dozens of Diseases
Oil pulling is an age old Ayurveda process which works on the root cause of symptoms and helps the body in its healing process, hence takes significant amount of time in giving you the desired results. The cost is the price of a daily spoonful of coconut oil–cheaper than even a vitamin tablet. Yet it is one of the most powerful forms of therapeutic techniques available.
Oil pulling or oil swishing involves swishing oil in the mouth Ayurvedic literature describes oilpulling as capable of both improving oral health and treating serious and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or asthma. According to Dr. F. Karach, M.D, oilpulling is very simple, completely harmless, and inexpensive therapy which totally heals head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.
The oil is “worked” in the mouth by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. It is done one to three times a day on an empty stomach. The best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but can be done before any meal. The used oil is discarded and the mouth rinsed out with water. The oil is never swallowed because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.
Oil pulling works the same way as cleaning soaps. Soaps are basically fats that attract germs in order to clean. Oil pulling attracts germs and bacteria to ‘pull’ them out of your mouth. It cleans your gum line without damaging your gums. It has been known to cure problems with bad breath, and helps with gum inflammation. It can also help prevent and reverse tooth disease.
Scientific validations of the Ayurveda dental health practices could justify their incorporation into modern dental care. Publicity of these techniques using appropriate media would benefit the general population by giving more confidence in the ancient practices, thus preventing tooth decay and loss.
Oil pulling therapy can be done using oils like sunflower oil or sesame oil. The sesame plant (Sesamum indicum) of the Pedaliaceae family has been considered a gift of nature to mankind for its nutritional qualities and desirable health effects. Sesame oil is considered to be the queen of oil seed crops because of its beneficiary effects. However, coconut oil is the most pleasant inside the mouth and many suggest the most effective.
(NaturalNews) One of the biggest health myths is the idea that a person can get all the nutrition s/he needs by simply eating a balanced diet. The truth is that it is next to impossible to get even the minimal RDA amounts of the limited number of vitamins and minerals on the RDA list, much less the amounts of all the many nutrients needed for optimal health from diet alone.
Decades of over-farming has left the world’s top soils severely depleted of essential minerals. For the most part, the only minerals replaced have been those needed for optimal growth and not vital minerals such as magnesium which are needed for optimal health.
Foods on our grocers’ shelves frequently have had true nutrition processed out (and often harmful additives processed in to enhance shelf life, taste, color and texture). In many instances most of the claimed nutrition comes from added synthetic petrochemical vitamins and crushed rock minerals – which are vastly inferior to natural vitamins and minerals found in food.
This author has repeatedly challenged balanced-diet proponents to devise a weekly 2000 to 2500 calorie a day diet plan which provides all of just the measly nutrient amounts on the limited RDA chart. Thus far no one has come close. Keep in mind that in many instances RDA amounts of vitamins and minerals are merely the theoretical amounts needed to prevent deficiency-related illness. Besides the fact that RDA amounts are often far below the optimal amounts, the RDA list does not include literally hundreds of other valuable nutrients which we have evolved and adapted to utilize.
If it is so easy to get all the nutrition needed from diet alone, why is it that up to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium? For that matter, why is it that most of us are deficient in other vital nutrients as well – even those of us who regularly eat a so-called balanced diet?
Another related myth is the idea that doctors are good sources of information and advice about diet and nutrition. In most instances, mainstream doctors are woefully deficient in information about diet and nutrition. Doctors are taught in medical schools where the primary funding source is the pharmaceutical industry and where curriculum is controlled by the AMA. Not surprisingly, doctors are taught that the way to treat illness is to prescribe drug company medications and to perform mainstream medical treatments. What they are not taught is the vital role that diet and proper nutrition play in our health.
One longtime doctor turned naturopath told this author that during his entire mainstream education he had but one single lecture on diet and nutrition. Other doctors, including more recent graduates, confirmed that their educational experience was much the same when it came to diet and nutrition.
In the world of mainstream health misinformation about vegetable and fruit servings, a serving of a fortified “fruit drink” is considered equal to a bowl of fresh organic blueberries and an order of french fries is equal to a bowl of fresh organic spinach.
A good plan for obtaining plenty of nutrition to insure a maximum of good health and a minimum of illness is:
1. Eat a healthy and varied nutrient-dense diet with as many fresh organic items as possible.
2. Avoid junk foods, processed foods and inorganic meats – especially processed meat products.
3. Utilize supplemental items such as organic superfood powders and whole food derived nutrients to insure that you get all the vital kinds and amounts of nutrition needed.

(NaturalNews) The latest research on high dose, intravenous vitamin C continues to confirm its cytotoxic effects on many cancers in tissue culture models. Results have been so promising that oncologists are now researching the combination of vitamin C with standard chemo drugs. Not surprisingly, vitamin C was found to boost the effectiveness of several chemo drugs so much that two clinical trials have been started. But recent research has also uncovered several natural compounds that boost the cancer-killing effects of vitamin C and may pave the way for highly effective, all-natural combination therapies in the future.
It is now well accepted that high dose IV vitamin C therapy generates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in tissues, and it is the H2O2 that selectively kills cancer cells through oxidative stress. Oncologists reasoned that this added stress may enhance chemo drugs’ effectiveness. Many lab studies have supported this, showing that vitamin C significantly increases the effectiveness of drugs against breast, colon, ovarian, prostate cancer cells and others. However, some of the same studies also confirmed the cytotoxicity of vitamin C alone for these cancers. This raises the question if doctors should be looking for less harmful, natural agents to combine with vitamin C rather than chemo drugs, which often carry terrible side effects and toxicity.
Recent research has shown that several natural compounds do indeed boost vitamin C’s ability to kill cancer cells. A summary of this is shown in the table below, along with the combined anti-cancer effect compared to vitamin C alone (indicative only), and the type of cancer tested.
Natural Agent Combined With Vitamin C or H2O2–Combined Effect–Cancer Type/Cell Line
Maitake Beta-glucan++prostate PC-3
Maitake GD Fraction++bladder T24
Meshimakobu PL Fraction ++bladder T24
Black tea polyphenol TF(3)++lung adenocarcinoma SPC-A-1
Green tea polyphenol EGCG+lung adenocarcinoma SPC-A-1
Retinoic Acid++breast MCF-7
Vitamin D (with H2O2)+breast MCF-7
Vitamin D (with H2O2)+colon HT-29
Copper (CuCl / CuCl2)+leukemia HL-60
Iron (FeCl2 / FeCl3)-leukemia HL-60
IV Glutathione–pancreas xenograft
Maitake and meshimakobu mushroom extracts combined with vitamin C achieved a 90% death rate of bladder cancer cells, while maitake extract with vitamin C achieved a 95% death rate of prostate cancer cells — and all with a relatively low dose of vitamin C. Black and green tea polyphenols were both helpful, but black tea polyphenol was the stand-out winner, increasing lung cancer cell death rate from 1% to over 22%. Retinoic acid (a metabolite of vitamin A) tripled the anti-proliferative effect of vitamin C on breast cancer cells (up to 75.7% inhibition). Vitamin D (calcitriol) combined with H2O2, which is released during IV vitamin C treatment, increased the breast cancer cell death rate by 78% compared to H2O2 alone. Some additives, however, actually inhibited the effectiveness of vitamin C. For example, vitamin C lost 95% of its cancer killing power when glutathione was co-injected, and the tumour shrinkage normally seen with vitamin C alone was inhibited.
This remains a very active area of research, and more powerful combinations with vitamin C may yet be identified in the future. The positive combinations shown above are not yet being tested in clinical trials, but in the meantime they offer a lower risk, high potential benefit that patients and practitioners may want to consider in designing their own natural therapies.
(NaturalNews) Many spices such as turmeric and cinnamon are powerful antioxidants that continue to gain acceptance as natural nutrients able to assist human health and prevent chronic disease. Researchers from Penn State publishing in The Journal of Nutrition provide strong evidence that these potent spices provide a protective shield to reduce the body`s negative responses to eating high-fat meals. A diet filled with high-fat foods that have been fried or baked with trans fats increases oxidized LDL cholesterol levels and dangerous blood fats known as triglycerides. Turmeric and cinnamon taken before a high fat meal combine to lower the triglyceride response by as much as 30%, preventing a cascade of harmful metabolic events that lead to heart disease and diabetes.
Culinary spices have peaked interest among nutritional scientists in recent years as both turmeric and cinnamon exhibit powerful antioxidant properties that may halt dangerous metabolic imbalances prompted by poor dietary choices. To conduct the study, researchers added 14 grams of a combined turmeric-cinnamon spice blend to a 1200 calorie high-fat meal, and compared the results to a control group not receiving the spice mixture.
Blood samples were taken prior to the meal and then again at 30 minute intervals for the next three and a half hours after eating. Participants were tested again one week later, and the two groups were switched to verify the accuracy of the results. Researchers found that blood levels of insulin were reduced by 21% and triglycerides dropped 31% in response to the turmeric-cinnamon mix.
The study authors found that the spices significantly improved two critical metabolic markers that are associated with increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. They commented “Adding spices to the meal significantly increased the ferric reducing antioxidant power, such that postprandial increases following the spiced meal were 2-fold greater than after the control meal.” They also found that the two spices interact synergistically and the impact was significantly greater when both spices were administered concurrently, compared to individual results.
Most health-conscious adults can benefit from a wide array of natural spices added to and consumed with many popular foods, regardless of specific dietary approach. Penn State authors concluded “The incorporation of spices into the diet may help normalize postprandial insulin and TG (triglyceride) and enhance antioxidant defenses.” Include turmeric and cinnamon to your favorite meals, or take a high quality supplement with meals to maximize your defense against metabolic dysfunction and heart disease.
Diet Soda Can Increase Your Waist Size By Up to 500 Percent | Dr. Joseph Mercola on Natural Health Products and Articles
Because of its high sugar content, soda is known to be one of the unhealthiest beverages you can drink. But if you believe that drinking sugar-free diet soda is better, here’s something for you to think about: a recent study presented at an American Diabetes Association meeting revealed that people who drank two or more diet sodas daily had a 500 percent greater increase in waist size!
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio followed 474 diet soda drinkers for almost a decade and found that their waistlines expanded by 70 percent compared to non-diet soda drinkers. Those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had the biggest waistlines. (Link)
Why Diet Soda Does Not Support Weight Management
In 2005, a team led by study co-author Sharon Fowler found that each can of diet soda you drink in a day increases your obesity risk by 41 percent.
Diet soda contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which may contain zero calories but can’t fool your body and brain. When your body detects that you’re consuming something sweet, it expects that it contains calories. Since artificial sweeteners don’t provide calories, they can cause distortions in your biochemistry that may result in weight gain, Dr. Joseph Mercola explains.
Your brain knows the difference between sugar and an artificial sweetener, which tends to increase activity in your brain’s pleasure center even though it provides lower actual satisfaction. This causes your body to crave more artificial sweeteners – as well as real sugar – because your brain is not satisfied at the cellular level by the sugar imposter.
Diet Soda and Cardiovascular Disease
Another study presented earlier this year at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2011 suggested that diet soda can increase your risk of stroke.
Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Columbia University followed more than 1,000 volunteers for over nine years. About 900 of the participants said they did not consume any diet soda, while about 160 drank one or more diet sodas daily. (Link)
At the end of the study, the researchers noted that diet soda consumption and salt intake increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other deadly vascular conditions.
How to Quit Your Soda Habit
Eliminating your diet soda consumption is easier said than done – artificial sweeteners are addicting and have “positive reinforcing effects,” according to Dr. Martin Paulus, one of the authors of a study that compared the taste pathways of sugar and artificial sweeteners. “Humans will work for it, like for other foods, alcohol, and even drugs of abuse. Whenever you have that, there is a potential that a subgroup of people … will have a chance of getting addicted,” he says.
Your soda cravings may have an underlying emotional component. Dr. Mercola recommends the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), particularly Turbo Tapping, an EFT tool that allows you to resolve emotional aspects of an addictive problem in a short period of time.
After you have addressed your diet soda addiction, you can use the natural sweetener stevia, which is 300 times sweeter than sugar, has zero calories, and does not cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Dr. Mercola uses liquid stevia that comes in flavors like English Toffee and French Vanilla, which can be added to seltzer water to produce a healthy soda alternative.

You’ve probably heard of enzymes, and you probably already know they are important for your digestion. But you may not be aware of just how necessary enzymes are to every cell in your body—not just for digestion but for ALL your physiological processes.
Enzymes are composed of amino acids and are secreted by your body to help catalyze functions that would normally not occur at physiological temperatures. They literally make magic happen and are absolutely vital to your life.
More than 3,000 different enzymes have been identified, and some experts believe there may be another 50,000 we have yet to discover. Each enzyme has a different function—like 3,000 specialized keys cut to fit 3,000 different locks. In this analogy, the locks are biochemical reactions.
Enzymes drive biological processes necessary for your body to build raw materials, circulate nutrients, eliminate unwanted chemicals, and the myriad of other biochemical processes that go on without your even thinking about it.
For starters, here are just some of the activities in your body requiring enzymes:
Absorption of oxygen
Fighting infections and healing wounds
Getting nutrients into your cells
Carrying away toxic wastes
Breaking down fats in your blood, regulating cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Dissolving blood clots
Proper hormone regulation
Slowing the aging process
And small amounts of enzymes can affect profound changes! Enzymes are the catalysts that cause many essential biochemical reactions to happen—but they are not “used up” IN the reaction. They merely assist—meaning, they accelerate reactions—sometimes to a mind-boggling several million reactions per second!
Enzymes lower the amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur. Without them, some reactions simply would not function in your body.
But enzymes don’t work alone.
Enzymes rely on other elements to accomplish their tasks, such as certain vitamins and minerals. These elements are called “coenzymes.”
You are probably already familiar with one of these—coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is found in the mitochondria (power centers) of your cells where it is involved in making ATP, every cell’s principal energy source. Another example is magnesium, which participates in over 300 enzyme reactions.

(NaturalNews) Recently someone in my community asked how to get rid of pesky critters. A neighbor who own a garden center said that they use Diatomaceous Earth. Well – that seemed to me to be a golden opportunity to reveal my little secret to the world – that I have been eating Diatomaceous Earth for about a year now.
D.E. has many beneficial effects, but it is the anti-aging effect that I have seen most pronounced as a change in myself. Rather remarkably, since I have been eating D.E., I have stopped needing to bleach myhair. It has gone from a mousy mostly grey to a luscious blond/brown (my pre-65 year old haircolor). I am really happy about this change – as it is saving me tons of money ($300 a pop for tin-foil bleaching). Even my hairdresser is surprised at the change, and keeps telling me how nice the color of my hair is. However, the good news for my hair dresser is that my hair is now growing wildly faster, and so I am able to keep her happy by needing more frequent haircuts.
Diatomaceous Earth is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one-celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals. This mineral-based compound contains silicon, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron and other trace minerals that the body needs to stay healthy. All Diatomaceous Earth is 84% Silicon Dioxide (Silica).
Here is the science behind my peculiar habit of eating this stuff:
Diatomaceous Earth is the hands-down best source of the mineral silica. In 1939, Nobel Prize Doctor Butenant showed the importance of silica for life itself. It may be true that silica is the most important trace element in humanhealth. Silica plays an important role in many body functions. The human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals. Years ago, the silica found in our foodstuffs was adequate for our needs. But with today’s hybrids and depleted soils, only about 1/3 of the silica needed is supplied in our food.?
Diatomaceous Earth looks like a cylinder full of holes–kind of like Rice Chex Cereal. This cylinder has a very strong negative charge while pathogens have a positive charge. As these millions of cylinders move through thestomachand digestive tract, they attract and absorb fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticides and drug residues, E-Coli, and heavy metals. These are trapped inside the cylinder and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that happen to be in the stomach or digestive tract are “cut up” and killed by the sharp edges of the diatomaceous earth. All of these activities result in a much healthier body with less sickness.?
The spa that I own, La Casa Day Spa (http://www.Lacasaspa.com) in Manhattan, emphasizes therapies thatdetoxthe body. Last month, we wrote our 50,000th receipt. That’s 50,000 detox treatments we have done in 18 years, a lion’s share of those being colonics. We want allpeopleto continue to have colonics because colonics give a thorough cleansing of thecolon. But we also want people to know how to continue colon cleansing athome. D.E. is the perfect home remedy.
Diatomaceous Earth is?very?hard. On the hardness scale where diamonds are a 9, Diatomaceous Earth is a 7. This hardness is important because as those millions of tiny hard and sharp diatomaceous earth cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they “scrub” the walls. After only a few months of taking Diatomaceous Earth, the intestine wall is no longer coated with mucus and molds but has become clean. The advantages of this are several:
-regularizes bowel movements (this is the most frequently mentioned benefit about D.E.)
-creates a healthier colon environment (a cleaner colon helps to keep away polyps, cancers,
-gives increasedenergyand less need for sleep (with a cleaner colon, food and nutrients are
better absorbed into thebloodstream)
-reducesinflammationof the intestinal tract (can prevent or clear up diarrhea and, rather
intelligently, also cures the opposite condition of constipation)
-helps to normalize hemorrhoidal tissues
-alleviates lower back pain that is caused by a too-full colon
Over-All Health Benefits:
-helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution
-lowers high blood pressure
-lowers high cholesterol
-addresses osteoporosis?& joint problems
-acts as a cough decreasing agent; tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx)
and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system
-helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause?
-helps to prevent kidney stones
-heals infections of the urinary tract; is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of
urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal
function to these vital organs
-effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well
as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
-acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear (effective in reducing
swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat)
-has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects
-normalizes circulation and regulates high blood pressure(hypertension)
-decreases vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia
-promotes synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas, thus helping to normalize diabetes
-strengthens blood vessels
-helps to prevent Tuberculosis.
-improves the elasticity of the joints; helps rheumatism
-stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels
One of thebenefitsof silica is that it helps to destroy bad fats. Taken in the morning, it helps to curb appetite throughout the day.
Hair (90 micrograms per gram) needs almost as much silica as bone (100 micrograms per gram). Eating D.E., with its rich supply of silica, should be part of any ongoing hair revitalization program. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster andstrength.
D.E. serves as nature’s internal cosmetic for skin, nails andteethas well as hair.?Collagen underneath theskinenhances elasticity and beauty. Collagen is largely made up of silica. As we age, tissue degeneration?accelerates because our connective tissue begins to lose the ability to retain moisture. Silica helps to slow down the degenerative/moisture-losing process ofagingconnective tissue.?
Silica also protects our teeth and gums. By hardening the enamel, silica prevents cavities and preserves teeth. Silica also helps to prevent bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession.
Finally, silica can help avoid or alleviate Alzheimer’s by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum.

(NaturalNews) Binge eating of sugary or fatty junk foods brought on by periods of emotional stress or otherwise may be remedied by consuming saturated fat, finds new research. The reason that many are drawn to junk foods in the first place is a nutritional deficiency. Cravings for chocolate may indicate a magnesium deficiency, for example. Similarly, your body may desire saturated fat during your craving for junk food.
The study is one of the first to show that when it comes to food affecting your emotions, taste isn`t everything. Instead, it is “even more rooted in our biology,” says Giovanni Cizza, M.D., an obesity and neuroendocrinology researcher at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, in Bethesda, Maryland, who was not involved in the research. In fact, saturated fat may affect the brain by triggering the release of hormones. The connection between the brain and the gut has been well established in the past, with studies indicating that gut health may actually be directly linked to mental health and stability. Poor gut health has been found to be a major factor in the development of depression and even bipolar disorder.
Published in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, they studied 12 volunteers, who were considered healthy and of normal weight. Researchers infused one of two “meal” options into the stomachs of the volunteers: a solution of saturated fatty acids or a saline control solution. After giving the volunteers their meals, researchers played sad classical music and showed them images of faces with sad expressions — two techniques that have been proven to be effective in inducing sadness in the past. Afterwards, mood surveys indicated that volunteers, who had ingested the saturated fatty acid solution, found the sad music to be far less depressing than those, who were given the saline control solution.
MRI scans taken during the study confirmed the findings; participants, who had consumed the fatty solution, exhibited less activity in parts of the brain that are involved in sadness. The researchers were excited to find that saturated fats helped to curb negative emotions, and the real world implications were quite hopeful as well. Those struggling with straining emotional times, who are often driven to consume health-damaging junk foods, can help ward off these cravings through extra consumption of saturated fat.
Great sources of saturated fat include: coconut oil, organic raw certified butter, organic ground beef, dark chocolate (70% or more cacao content), salmon, and organic eggs.
(NaturalNews) Would you be willing to make six simple lifestyle changes if you knew you could lower your risk of developing Alzheimer`s disease by 50%? Researchers publishing the result of a study in the journal Lancet Neurology found that the exploding incidence of this horrific form of dementia is due in large part to lifestyle changes involving diet, physical activity and education. Alzheimer`s disease incidence is expected to triple over the next forty years, meaning that millions of new cases could be prevented by modifying controllable lifestyle risks. Scientists listed the six most important factors that can be modified in an effort to significantly lower Alzheimer`s disease risk.
Researchers analyzed dozens of Alzheimer`s studies from around the world that examined hundreds of thousands of participants to determine why this insidious disease is growing at an unprecedented rate. Dr. Deborah Barnes, lead scientist performing the review, concluded that there are six significant and modifiable risk factors that contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Her team listed the factors in descending order of magnitude: low education, smoking, physical inactivity, depression, mid-life hypertension, diabetes and mid-life obesity.
As a group, these risk factors account for 54% of the diagnosed cases of Alzheimer`s disease in the United States, accounting for 2.9 million individuals. Dr. Barnes commented on the findings, “What`s exciting is that this suggests that some very simple lifestyle changes, such as increasing physical activity and quitting smoking, could have a tremendous impact on preventing Alzheimer`s and other dementias in the United States and worldwide.” The team will now work to determine if the relationship between each identified risk factor is casual or specifically attributable to disease development.
Further research into contributing factors that increase risk for developing Alzheimer`s dementia are published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. Scientists compared physical activity duration and intensity with the development of cognitive impairment known to be a precursor to the memory-robbing illness. As participants` energy expenditure increased, the rate of cognitive decline decreased. The amount of exercise equivalent to a brisk, 30-minute walk every day was associated with lower risk of cognitive impairment.
Alzheimer`s disease cases have multiplied exponentially over the past 50 years, leading health-minded practitioners and followers to ask for an explanation. Our lifestyle has changed dramatically during this time period, and diet, physical activity and diseases of excess have hindered the forward progress of our cognitive health. Adopting a natural diet low in sugar and refined carbohydrates combined with regular and moderate physical activity can slash many risk factors associated with Alzheimer`s dementia.
(NaturalNews) Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in the United States over the age 50. According to the American Cancer Society, 32,050 men in the United States die from the disease each year. But, prostate cancer doesn`t have to be fatal. More and more people are turning to dietary and lifestyle changes to heal their bodies naturally and beat this disease.
Henry Stein was a typical 64-year-old man, who ate the Standard American Diet (SAD), and didn`t think he was particularly at risk for prostate cancer. During a routine checkup, his urologist suggested a biopsy, and it was determined that Henry had prostate cancer and a Gleason Score (a grading system that measures prostate cancer severity) of 8, a number that indicated the cancer was “fast-growing”. This was very bad news for a guy that thought he was invincible.
Stein`s urologist explained all the treatment options, which included surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and chemical castration drugs. The side effects of radiation pellets were incontinence, bowel damage and the possibility that the radiation could cause new cancer. Needless to say, these side effects of the cure sounded worse than the disease! So did the fact that arthroscopic surgery (a new technique using robotic instruments) could be fatal due to a fat embolism or other complication.
“I decided that there HAD to be other choices,” says Stein. “After all, I was only 64 and planned to live into my 100`s to see my Grandchildren`s Children! The standard amount of time to live was only was 5 years past treatment!”
With the help of his loving wife, Henry began to research alternative cancer cures. He started on the internet and poured over all the material he could get his hands on.
“No matter what your diagnosis or status, you have to start with RESEARCH. Don`t let anyone do it for you, as this is a journey, not a destination! The amount and quality of alternative cancer cure information available is truly staggering!”
He found several common threads in all the sites he examined. All advice pointed to a change in diet- the elimination of meat and dairy products, the addition of whole, raw and organic foods, and the switch to an alkaline stomach environment, which is created by eating mostly fruits and vegetables.
“When they say, “Change your lifestyle” and “Change your diet” they really mean “CHANGE!” Stein explains. “Like in obliterate all previously held beliefs, food choices, desires and favorite fast foods.”
After 64 years of being a meat-eater, Stein gave up the Standard American Diet to become a vegan. He also installed a water filtration system to alkalize his water supply and started doing yoga, something he never envisioned his body could achieve.
“I was the only guy in yoga class,” he laughs, “but now there is another guy in the class; if he shows up again!”
After only a few months of his new vegan diet, his PSA score (number that grades the cancer`s severity) was down to 4.7. A few more months on his new diet and lifestyle and his score went down further to 3.5, which is considered a number within the “normal” range. Not only that, his cholesterol went from 170 down to 138. Henry Stein is on his way to recovery without ever having to suffer the unbearable side effects that result from surgery, chemo or radiation.
“The future is indeterminate for us all; but for me it`s looking pretty good right now!” says Stein.
(NaturalNews) There’s a certain logic to the science of drugs in that the active ingredient is often derived from plants. But there the logic ends, begging the question: Why don’t we just eat the plants?
Obviously there are many reasons why not: in some cases they may be unpalatable, often out of season, or grown on the other side of the world. Or you would have to eat a mountain of them to get the nutrients at the levels required.
Our doctors write a quick fix prescription of drugs that deal only with the symptom, rarely discussing diet as the perfect solution. Meanwhile we get sicker and sicker.
There’s a groundswell of opinion that diseases including cancer, diabetes and arthritis, and possibly forms of dementia too, can be healed or at the very least be prevented by diet. Many governments know this and make a token effort by recommending five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
But the healing requires firstly the absence of junk, processed and sugar-laden foods and secondly an abundance of raw fruit and vegetables. Far more than five a day.
The problem of quantity is further compounded by the poor condition of the soil in which nature’s bounty is grown, thanks to intensive farming and the extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Scientists Dr David Thomas and David E Marsh have conducted extensive research that shows massive loss of minerals such as selenium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc among others, often in the region of 50% or more.
Modern food technology, hooked on the “convenience” mantra, systematically processes out yet more nutrients and adds flavoring, preservatives and unnatural coloring to yet further destroy our food. Half the world populates burger bars and fast food outlets and eats itself towards obesity and an early grave.
With the media giving so much coverage and airtime to the problems of obesity, cancer and mental health, there may well be a revolution in the offing.
Juicing. And instead of five make that 10 per day to combat disease and provide cell energy for a fuller, happier and more productive life. This is a far more efficient way of ensuring delivery of the maximum nutrients. Or, as botanist and herbalist Richo Cech puts it: “A large volume of greens can be reduced into a single tempting glassful of concentrated fresh nutrition and taken with relative ease, without a whole lot of chewing!”
Author Cherie Calbom, otherwise known as “The Juice Lady” in her native US, reports giant strides in waking people up to the power of juicing for health and changing their diet to healthy whole foods.
“There is huge bias in the media against anything natural for health and healing because we’re a pharmaceutical-driven society. But people are catching on that this model does not support vibrant health, or even getting well. Changes can be judged by the ever-increasing popularity of organic produce and whole foods.”
Juice book sales are up and sales of juicers are growing daily, proving that people are becoming aware that they need to do things differently to stay healthy.
(NaturalNews) You may have heard of resveratrol, a miracle antioxidant found in grape skins (and many other foods) that’s linked to a lower risk of heart disease and enhanced longevity. Unlike other antioxidants such as anthocyanins, which give blueberries their color and are an integral part of the fruit, plants produce resveratrol only in response to fungal or bacterial attack. That’s right — resveratrol is a natural antibiotic and fungicide that’s intelligently synthesized by the grape plant in order to survive a biological attack!
This means that the more natural fungi and bacteria a plant is exposed to, the more resveratrol it will produce. That’s why if a grape plant is repeatedly sprayed with synthetic fungicides — and grapes are among the most pesticide-intensive crops cultivated — the resveratrol content in the fruit will be lower. Conventionally-grown grapes, in other words, contain relatively low levels of resveratrol. Wild grapes, on the other hand, contain enormous quantities of resveratrol (because that’s how they survive in the wild).
That alone may be incentive enough to buy organic grapes and wines, because resveratrol may also help maintain “healthy programmed cell death,” which means a process by which cancer cells commit “suicide” and kill themselves. (This helps prevent cancer from growing.) Studies have also shown that resveratrol can make chemotherapy more effective, weaken viruses including influenza and HIV, counter the effects of a high-fat diet and increase physical endurance. Perhaps most miraculously, resveratrol supplements appear to extend the lifespan of yeast, worms and even fish.
NaturalNews recently published a downloadable resveratrol report that contains a wealth of well-cited research about the astonishing health benefits of resveratrol.

(NaturalNews) Beets are often ignored by shoppers, even if they are available all year round. Perhaps you’re one of those who pass by the beet section looking for other veggies. Understanding the merits of buying, preparing, and consuming beets might make you reconsider and give them a fair trial.
Before getting into the eight health reasons, here is some information on preparing beets.
Purchasing and Preparing
Whole fresh organic beets offer two vegetables in one. The leaves are edible and tasty if steamed and topped with some butter, lemon or lime and your favorite spices. Those greens are similar to spinach in taste and texture and quite nutritious. Simply separate the beets from the leaves and store them until there are enough to steam. The separated beets can last for days in the fridge.
There are several ways to consume the red beets. The outer skins should be peeled regardless of how you prepare them. Then they can be grated raw and sprinkled on salads. Or chop them up into quarters, steam them and prepare as you would any vegetable. Consider a mild sauce topping or mush up some soft goat cheese for your topping.
Or, wait until the cooked beets cool and make a cold side dish with the beet chunks and some crushed walnuts: top off with goat or bleu cheese and olive oil and vinegar, yum!. There are several possible variations, all surprisingly tasty.
Of course, raw beets offer the most complete nutrients. And juicing beets with a slow masticating juicer is highly recommended. Juicing a few beets with lots of carrots and an apple or two is the tastiest way to go. And this adds more nutrients intact with important enzymes.
Eight Health Benefits
(1) Beet juice is alkaline and helps stave off acidosis, a harbinger of all diseases.
(2) Beet juice helps stimulate liver cells and cleanse and protect bile ducts. It also helps relieve the kidneys of stress to help cure gout. It also helps relieve constipation.
(3) Beets help cleanse the blood and create more red blood cells. They are useful for treating and curing anemia. Heavy daily beet consumption has even been used to treat leukemia and other cancers. With normal consumption, one can benefit from beets’ anti-carcinogenic properties.
(4) Red beets and their leaves are a high source of folate, which is the natural base of folic acid. Folate helps build tissue and red blood cells. Folic acid from folate is more beneficial for pregnant women than folic acid synthetically derived. It is healthier long term to depend on folate rather than to use folic acid supplements. Unfortunately, the two terms are misused interchangeably.
(5) Beets contain lots of lutein and zeaxanthin, both of which help prevent or even cure macular degeneration and other age related eye issues.
(6) Beets are a high source of phytonutrients called betalains. Beet betalains provide strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support.
(7) Beets help lower blood pressure, maintain blood vessel elasticity, and even help eliminate varicose veins.
(8) Beets are high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, niacin, calcium, iron, and biotin.
Beets can be so detoxifying that if you are in a toxic condition you may experience Herxheimer events (healing crisis) such as headaches and fatigue.
Red coloring in the stool or urine is not uncommon after consuming beets. It’s no big deal, though some say it might indicate a bit of anemia.
(NaturalNews) To hear many people in the mainstream media as well as mainstream medicine describe it, dementia is something similar to a curse: you will get it or you won’t, so all you can do as you get older is just wait and see. Fortunately, evidence is mounting that shows this simply isn’t so, and healthy and natural lifestyle choices can protect the brain and may prevent various forms of memory and identity robbing dementia.
For example, as NaturalNews previously reported, scientist William B. Grant, PhD, of the Sunlight, Nutrition, and Health Research Center (SUNARC), is researching a link between a lack of vitamin D and Alzheimer’s disease and other vascular dementias (http://www.naturalnews.com/026392_V…). And now comes word from two new studies that restful sleep and exercise may also play a huge role in preventing cognitive decline.
In a study just published in JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association), Kristine Yaffe, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, and her research team investigated the association between the very common problem of sleep-disordered breathing and the development of mild cognitive impairment as well as dementia. Their study included 298 elderly women without dementia at the beginning of the study who had overnight sleep studies between January 2002 and April 2004. Those who had sleep-disordered breathing know as apnea (abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing) of 15 or more events per hour of sleep were far more likely to develop memory problems and/or dementia than women without this disorder.
“Given the high prevalence and significant morbidity associated with both sleep-disordered breathing and cognitive impairment in older populations, establishing whether a prospective association exists between sleep-disordered breathing and cognition is important. This is especially important because effective treatments for sleep-disordered breathing exist,” the researchers said in a media statement. Treatments for apnea include losing weight — obesity greatly increases the odds a person will have sleep-related breathing pauses — and the use of oxygen during sleep.
Another natural way to protect the brain could be as simple as regular exercise. According to a study recently published in The Journal of Neuroscience, moderate exercise may lead to a variety of changes in the brain that boost its ability to protect itself during aging — including protection from memory loss.
For their new research, scientists led by Ruth Barrientos, PhD, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, found running on an exercise wheel protected older rats from memory loss following an Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection. The exercise especially protected the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in learning and memory that typically is impacted by bacterial infection in aging animals.
“This is the first study to show that exercise reduces susceptibility to the cognitive impairments that follow infection in aging animals, and the changes taking place in the brain thought to underlie these impairments,” Barrientos said in a press statement.
Although this was an animal study, there’s certainly reason to think the results could apply to humans. In people, older adults are more likely than the young to suffer memory problems, including dementia, after severe bacterial infection or injury. Jonathan Godbout, PhD, an expert on aging at Ohio State University, who was unaffiliated with the study, said in the media statement: “This study provides exciting evidence that a little moderate exercise is protective against age-related problems with health and immunity.”
